Ranking the best schools in Sacramento

Golden Gates drawbridge in Sacramento in the night time

“Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world.”

–Nelson Mandela

No matter where you live, what walk of life you come from, or even what political party you advocate, we can all agree on one thing: educating our children is vital. In fact, ensuring the next generation’s education with great teachers and schools is the best investment our society can make in its future.

So how do the schools in the Sacramento area grade? We scoured the numerous reports and research, including teacher reports, parent feedback, test scores, and comprehensive data by BestSchools.org, GreatSchools.org, and several others to see how each school ranks.

The Sacramento metro area is dominated by two school districts, San Juan Unified and Sacramento City Unified School District.

Sacramento City Unified School District educates 47,940 students with an 85% high school graduation rate. On average, $9,520 is spent on every student per year. To get in touch with the school district official, Jonathan Raymond, you can email superintendent@sac-city.k12.ca.us.

San Juan Unified District educates 47,245 students, with a high school graduation rate of 76%. On average, $8,810 is spent on every student per year. To get in touch with the school district official, Pat Jaurequi, you can email pat.jaurequi@sanjuan.edu.

There are plenty of schools we can be proud of, ranking at the top of the state or even in the country. But there are a few bad apples that demand our attention – and maybe a change if your child is a student there.

Here are our list of top-ranked schools (that we’d consider an 8, 9, or 10 on a scale from 1-10) by city and school district for the greater Sacramento area:
